Organise a birthday picnic

It is only May but the sun is here and hopefully here to stay. If you are celebrating your own or your partners birthday during spring or summer than organise a party in the outdoors. Just locate a park, beach or forest near your house and organise your own birthday picnic. It takes a little bit of planning on beforehand but will be more than worth it in the end. All you need is an outdoor venue that allows group gatherings, a blanket, great food, the sun and a handful of your best friends. The following tips will surely make it easier to start organising it.

Plan the venue well in advance.
You want to have the best location for the party. Although you might think it doesn’t make a difference: outdoors is outdoors right? You are wrong, everything is in the detail. When you’re planning a day in the park or the forest make sure that the place is easy to find and near a public toilet facility. Obviously not too near because you don’t want any party crashers or nasty smells wafting over. Also make sure that there are enough trees around for shelter from the sun or the rain (you never know, we live in Britain). When you are planning a day at the beach, the same pretty much applies but you should also consider that it might be harder to retain a specific spot that is free of sunbathers.
When you have a venue in mind it is time to start thinking about decorations. When you’re planning your birthday in the park, make use of the trees around you. Decorate the branches with balloons, fairy lights and lanterns. Always make sure nothing touches each other. You don’t want to start a fire. Don’t arrange any chairs or tables unless your grandma is visiting. Keep everything nice and simple by dotting around some colourful cushions and blankets. It will make the place look festive and cosy whilst also providing you with a well-defined party area.

What to bring
To keep everything nice and simple suggests that everyone brings food and drinks instead of birthday presents. This will save you lodging food and drinks around whilst also ensuring you of enough food and drinks to go round.
You could make a list with different foods for everyone to bring. You could go as far as describing who should bring what. Dig out your favourite recipe cook book and browse through the summer salad section. You will find some gems to let people bring a long for sure. You could also make it a themed afternoon: a Spanish Siesta, A Greek Lunch or an English afternoon tea. Everything goes.

If you suspect your friends are hopeless in the kitchen and will not be able to bring anything along then ask them for birthday present hampers instead. There are several gastronomic websites and delis that prepare food and drink hampers for any occasion. Everything in the hamper will be prepared on the day and delivered to your door. This way you can ensure yourself from the best tasting food and drinks whilst your friends have still bought you something nice.
Have I inspired you by now? Well than, get yourself planning ☺

Sea Odyssey

This weekend I am totally loving the Sea Odyssey performance which is taking place in Liverpool.

Royal de Luxe Sea Odyssey tells the story of a 30ft little girl and her playful dog, Xolo, travelling Liverpool’s streets in search of her 50ft diver Uncle who has a letter for her from her father, retrieved from the Titanic where he perished.

It looks and sounds great doesn’t it? I have to admit that I do find the girl kind of creepy. There’s something very sinister about it – but then I’m pretty weird like that. I don’t really like anything to tall to get through doors.

It takes a 40-strong team of aerialists to man one character and takes an hour for the puppeteers and crane-operators to limber up.

Courcoult founded the Royal de Luxe in 1979 with the intention of performing exclusively outdoors, and always for free. “I want to contact everyone,” he says. “Over three days I try to unfold a story so intense it will be talked about in every bar, school or office.”

If you’re in Liverpool go check it out!!

Ikea spying on customers…

Oh dear. I see Ikea is in the news for spying on disgruntled customers…in France.

Apparently police have searched the French headquarters after reports of the Swedish chain paying private detectives to snoop on workers and nose into the private lives of disgruntled customers who complained about late kitchen deliveries or faulty wardrobe parts.

Seriously?!

I can’t imagine why these French furniture pieces are so valuable that they’d need to spy on people who aren’t happy. I don’t like Ikea that much. That said, I’ll be honest with you, if you enter my house it does resemble the bargain basement section of an ikea store.

But Ikea furniture is just so boring isn’t it? Everyone having the same type of furniture in their homes, the same looks styled on the catalogue. I really should make a stand and start investing in some vintage pieces. But where to start…

Any ideas on where to shop or ways to individualise boring chain store furniture welcome…

Blonde…but not brassy! Garnier Nutrisse

So summer is coming and I’ve decided that it’s time to do something with my hair. I’ve made the decision to take my brunette locks and go lighter. Not just a light brown…but blonde!
I’ve been dying my hair “bitter sweet chocolate” for years and before Christmas decided to “swoosh” it up a little went for cherry red but and I hate to admit this all to you…I’m finding the dreaded grey hairs and dying dark is doing me no favours AT all.
I know I should probably go to a salon but I’ve been looking in to it and I’ve decided I’m going to save my money (Chablis and glossy magazines aren’t cheap you know!) and do it at home. So I’m looking for something that’s easy to apply, expert colour, at home!, home colour made easy and I want it Blonde – not brassy!

I have red undertones so brassy hair is a huge worry of mine, which is why I’m going to be using Garnier Nutrisse.

So I’ll be studying this Garnier Nutrisse Easy Application video in preparation for the big change…wish me luck!

* This is a sponsored post but I REALLY am going blonde!

Too much of anything is bad, but too much champagne is just right…

I am having a great love affair with St Pancras station at the moment. I was commissioned to do a travel piece on secret London and St Pancras is definitely my number one.

Whilst most railway stations in Britain make you think of dirty, smelly platforms crammed full of daily commuters there is something very romantic about St Pancras.  Maybe that’s because it’s the gateway to Paris but it’s a great place to kick off a touring holiday by rail.

But it isn’t just the ease of getting to Paris that’s exciting about St Pancras. It is also home to the Europe’s longest Champagne Bar. Champagne AND Paris – what is not to love?

“The glamorous Champagne Bar is renowned as Europe’s longest, situated below the magnificent Barlow Shed, allowing guests to fully appreciate the revolutionary architecture of this historic station.

The Champagne list is extensive, accommodating the largest selection of Grand Marque houses in the UK, with 17 styles available by the glass. It is a truly unique and stunning venue, with the capacity to host a small soiree for 2 or a grandiose affair for up to 500 guests.”

Aneurin Barnard Interview/We’ll Take Manhattan

Last June I was invited to interview Welsh actor Aneurin Barnard who had just completed filming new BBC Four drama “We’ll Take Manhattan” for Buzz magazine.

We’ll Take Manhattan sees Barnard take on the role of iconic photographer David Bailey and tells the story of his 1962 Vogue photo-shoot with model Jean Shrimpton.

I have to say that he was possibly one of the loveliest actors I’ve interviewed he was very down to earth and extremely passionate about his new project. Below is a copy of the article, which was in the July copy of Buzz. I can’t remember where I saved the original full-length transcription of the interview but I’ll have a good look through my files and post it underneath when retrieved!

We’ll Take Manhattan is on BBC Four tonight at 9pm (26.01.12)

Aneurin Banard Interview

Grapeseed oil the benefits…

hello!

It seems like forever since I last posted a blog. I’ve been in the grips of this awful Christmas cold which seems to be with me for life and I’m beavering away on the new website which I HOPE to have finished by the end of the week so apologies for the absence.

I’ve loads to blog about, especially about my new obsession with coconut oil (more of that on the new site). But today I’m interested in the story about Emma Stone (Hollywood Star) attributing grapeseed oil as the key to her clear and well, lets face it perfect complexion.

Apparently she splashes it on her face several times a day and at a cost of around £2 a bottle it’s a pretty inexpensive skin care regime.

I have a strong affinity with using natural oils etc when it comes to wellbeing and skin care. My grandmother was from Malta so as you can imagine she used to dole out advice left, right and center on Mediterranean methods. From using oil to get rid of stretch marks so you look amazing in your bikini right through to using it as a way to manage your weight and look great in jeans so its good to see Hollywood stars continuing the trends.

I’m starting to think about following more of a Mediterranean diet and method for 2012 – again something which I’ll probably delve in to further in future blog posts. But if for now you fancy doing an Emma and grabbing some grapeseed oil here are some facts:

  • Grapeseed oil is almost odourless and light in texture the natural product is said to be easily absorbed by the skin and is commonly used as a massage oil.
  • Its been used for centuries by the ancient Greeks and the Egyptians
  • The benefits are two fold, it protects your face from the sun as it has SPF properties and it also protects your skin against wrinkles.
  • It has high levels of vitamin E!

Worth giving a go for the £2 price tag right?
